Franciacorta
Franciacorta is one of Italy’s most renowned traditional method sparkling wines, produced in the Lombardy region within the Franciacorta wine area. The region lies near Lake Iseo, where glacial morainic soils and a favourable microclimate provide excellent conditions for sparkling wine production.
Franciacorta is made using the traditional method (metodo classico), the same bottle fermentation process used in the Champagne region. This technique requires extended ageing on the lees, contributing to greater complexity and refined, persistent bubbles.
The wines are typically produced from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero grapes, with smaller amounts of Pinot Bianco also permitted. During ageing, Franciacorta develops layered aromas that may include citrus, apple and notes reminiscent of toasted bread or brioche.
Franciacorta is often considered Italy’s answer to Champagne: similarly elegant and structured, yet often presenting a slightly lighter and more approachable character. It is well suited as an aperitif, for celebrations, or as a versatile partner for food.
