What is a Bialetti coffee maker and why is it so popular?

The Bialetti Moka Express has been produced since 1933 and is an iconic Italian coffee maker. Its simple design ensures longevity—when cared for properly—and the coffee it brews is richly aromatic, reminiscent of espresso. It’s no surprise it has become a symbol of Italian coffee culture. Whether for a morning pick-me-up or a friendly gathering, the Bialetti coffee maker guarantees the perfect home coffee experience.

Which Bialetti coffee maker is right for you?

Moka Express – the classic aluminium model embodying the traditional Italian coffee experience. Available in red, black, and tricolour, with special editions based on the Moka Express design.

Moka Induction – the stainless-steel version of the Moka Express, designed for induction hobs.

Brikka – for lovers of creamy coffee, featuring a valve system. The silicone valve in the column builds up higher pressure, resulting in stronger extraction, richer aroma, and crema.

Venus – a stainless-steel variant suitable for induction hobs (from 4-cup size), offering an elegant appearance.

Sizes – available from 1 to 18 cups, depending on the model, ensuring everyone finds their ideal fit.

How to make perfect coffee with a Bialetti

1. Fill the bottom chamber with fresh water, up to just below the safety valve. Using less water yields a shorter, stronger brew, while overfilling is forbidden. Pre-boiled water is recommended to speed up brewing and reduce the risk of burnt, bitter taste.

2. Fill the funnel with freshly ground coffee (medium grind) up to the rim—no tamping required. The funnel must be full.

3. Screw the coffee maker together (carefully, if using pre-boiled water) and place it on a low heat.

4. Listen for the characteristic “gurgling” sound—that’s when the coffee is brewing. With Brikka, the gurgle is more intense and requires extra attention on the hob.

5. Remove from heat as soon as the coffee is ready, and enjoy the aroma of freshly brewed coffee!

Tip: Use only a low flame (up to the rim) and never leave the coffee on heat too long—the result may be bitter, and the handle could melt!

Care and cleaning: keep the flavour fresh

Rinse with water before first use. For the “breaking-in” process, brew only water followed by two or three coffee brews, discarding each—this removes manufacturing residues and metallic taste.

After each use, fill the upper chamber with water immediately to prevent coffee acids from sticking. Once cooled, rinse parts with warm water—no detergent needed.

Every three to six months, perform a vinegar or citric acid brew-through.

Check the gasket and filter regularly, and replace if necessary.

Aluminium models must be thoroughly dried to avoid oxidation.

FAQs & tips

Why won’t the coffee rise? Possibly due to too fine grind, insufficient water, or worn gasket.

Why is the coffee bitter? Brewed on too high a flame or left on heat for too long.

Which grinder should I use? A manual or conical grinder achieves the ideal grind size.

What coffee is suitable? 100% Arabica or Arabica‑Robusta blend, medium grind.
