The village of Castelli, located in the Abruzzo region of Central Italy, is famous for its ceramics, and its churches are also connected to this artisanal tradition.
The Church of San Donato (Chiesa di San Donato), often called the "Sistine Chapel of majolica," is one of the artistic treasures of the Abruzzo region. Its unique feature is the ceiling, which is covered with more than 780 majolica tiles, made by local ceramic masters in the early 17th century. The tiles depict a variety of patterns, including geometric shapes, flowers, animals, noble crests, and sacred images.
