The Mediterranean pine nut is the seed of the of the (Italian) stone pine, probably the best known edible nut-yielding pine tree in the world. The pine nuts were part of the food ration given to legionnaires because of their high nutrient content: they are rich in proteins, magnesium, iron and phosphor, as well as vitamins B1 and P. Mediterranean pine nuts are the essential ingredient of pesto.
